My equipment

I started shooting with Kodak DX4530. I had this camera for few years, but it broken down. I was looking for a n ew camera and chose Olympus SP-565UZ. This camera had manual mode, manual focus and RAW output. But after few months of usage I found some limitations like huge depth of field, buffer for only one RAW image or image quality in bad light conditions. Finally I decided to buy DSLR camera. I compared mid-range DSLRs on market and bought Sony α500.

My current equipment

Sony α500

Mid-range DSLR with 12MPx CMOS APS-C sized sensor.

Sony AF DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM (SAL1855)

Kit lens from Sony. It is plastic, but has very good image quality. It is useful in interiors thanks to its focal range. Disadvantage is its aperture ratio.

  • Focal range: 18-55mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 27-82.5mm
  • Max. aperture: f/3.5-5.6
  • Minimum focus distance: 250mm
  • Rating at www.dyxum.com: 4.00/5

Minolta 24-105mm F3.5-4.5 D

Good zoom lens for fullframe DSLRs. Huge positive is that I can use 55mm filters on my DSLR with APS-C sized sensor.

  • Focal range: 24-105mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 46-156mm
  • Max. aperture: f/3.5-4.5

  • Max. aperture: f/4-5.6

Sony HVL-F42AM

Other equipment I tried

Sony AF DT 18-70 F3.5-5.6 SAL1870

Sony kit lens before better SAL1855. It is same lens as Minolta 18-70mm. I didn't like image quality, because it lack details even stopped down. SAL1855 is much better.

  • Focal range: 18-70mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 27-105mm
  • Max. aperture: f/3.5-5.6
  • Minimum focus distance: 380mm
  • Rating at www.dyxum.com: 3.47/5

Minolta AF 28-80 F3.5-5.6 II

This lens has lower rating than Sony SAL1870 or Minolta 28-100, but in my opinion it has better image quality. For me, this lens is somewhere between SAL1870 and SAL1855. It isn't good enough for macro shots, but for I think it is good enough for holidays.

  • Focal range: 28-80mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 42-120mm
  • Max. aperture: f/3.5-5.6
  • Minimum focus distance: 380mm

Minolta AF 28-100 F3.5-5.6 D

Image quality is simillar to Sony SAL1870. I tried it on holidays, but I wasn't satisfied with image quality and colours. But it has very good focal range for outside shooting.

  • Focal range: 28-100mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 42-150mm
  • Max. aperture: f/3.5-5.6
  • Minimum focus distance: 480mm

Minolta AF 35-80 F4-5.6 II

Image quality is very close to Sony SAL1855, but sometimes has more chromatic abberation in corners. I had this lens as backup lens, but I finally sold it. New owner replaced his Sony SAL1870 with this lens and was very happy with it.

  • Focal range: 35-80mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 52.5-120mm
  • Max. aperture: f/4-5.6
  • Minimum focus distance: 380mm

Minolta AF 75-300 F4.5-5.6

Superb telezoom lens with very good image quality and very nice boked. But it is huge and heavy. I tried it for few days and like it's output.

  • Focal range: 75-300mm
  • Focal range (35mm equivalent): 112.5-450mm
  • Max. aperture: f/4.5-5.6
  • Minimum focus distance: 1500mm
  • Rating at www.dyxum.com: 4.62/5
